In my last post I said I'd break things down in ideology's instead of political parties. I wanted to do it this way to show that the ideology is a lot different than the mission or goals that back it. You can say you want to end world hunger by growing more corn and that sound great but if what's backing it is forced labor then the greatness of the idea changes. The English language is good at making things that are supposed to make perfect sense confusing as hell.
I'd suppose I'm starting this in "Chinese Writing" form since I'm starting with the right and working my way left but it's easier to write about what's closer to you than whats farther away.
Conservatism is like any other "ism" its a philosophy or ideology. It's not a party platform any more than speaking in tongue's is something that you'll see your average Methodist doing on Sundays. All "isms" get twisted and contorted to meet the needs of whoever pushing them.
George Bush says he's a Conservative, but he's "compassionate." Well if that's the case, I'd like him more if he were a cold hearted bastard who beat puppies with kittens.
John McCain has described himself as a Moderate Conservative. Apparently, he wasn't at the meeting when Rove and Scooter decided that the word they were going to use was "Compassionate." Granted, in pure economic terms McCain would spend less money than Bush but the areas he'd spend the most would be just as stupid as Dub'ya's. The war on terror and the war on global warming. Hell at this point, we need a war on people who like to declare war on things.
See the difference? Everywhere you look there's a different spin on the word Conservative.
But Conservatism has remained rather static over the years. The same is true for Socialism. "Moderate ism" is new but still the same as every other "All is Well" philosophy. Libertarianism is both old and new. It's old because it's what this country was founded on. Libertarianism is also new because most folks are too stupid to know what this country was founded on in the first place.
So here are some bullet points about the Conservatism Ideology:
Conservatism says that you shouldn't spend more than you make. That's a novel idea considering the morons who claim to be conservative whilst spending Billions more than we could ever take in.
Conservatism says that certain things are good for everyone, certain things are good for some and certain things are good for no one. Prohibition is a good example. It wasn't good for anyone so we outlawed it but what ended up being worse were the bullets from Tommy Guns and mobsters running our police departments so now it's only good for some folks-- those who are over 21. I'd like to see this explained logically to a 19 year old who just got back from playing police officer in Iraq for 18 months.
Conservatism says that money isn't the root of all evil but rather the hatred of money is the root of all evil. That makes the most sense of everything thus far...
Conservatism says that all are equal in the eyes of the Lord provided they agree to affirm that said Lord has said power to make said person equal. And you better be clear on which lord that is or you'll be subject to any number of unspeakable acts. None the least of which is being reduced to a third party supporter who can't get a city councilman elected, much less a president.
Conservatism says that we should be praying before we start a government meeting. I'd be fine with that provided we allowed every religion to open that meeting with it's own prayer but those meetings start at like 7pm and there are a lot of religions around here so perhaps for the sake of brevity, we should just forgo the whole thing. But if you wanted to start a meeting of say five thousand folks who were all Baptists then what's the harm so I could go either way on this one.
Conservatism says that the all mighty dollar isn't "all" but it's still pretty damned "mighty."
Hell, I'll buy that...
Conservatism says the folks are the result of their choices and that no one cares about folks who make bad choices. Socialists gain seats in congress for some reason every time this comes up...
Conservatism says that governments should be smaller. They've never been good at pointing out exactly what size it should be, but it's too big...
Conservatism's done a pretty good job proving that Socialism is bad but it's done a sub-par job of proving why Conservatism is good.
Conservatives love to share these principles with anyone who will listen. They are pretty sure they've got everything right so it's their job to share it with the world. By force if necessary...
Religious conservatives are good at getting all huffy and animated and bludgeoning their party and political leaders with the baseball bats that are re-election threats if and when they don't tow the line on Gay Marriage and Abortion.
There are millions of types of conservatives; each one taking it's own portions from the main doctrine and leaving the rest on the shelf. Each "sect" using what it likes and ignoring what it doesn't, kind of like a modern religion. But the difference between Conservatism and Socialism is that Conservatism needs a parent religion these days that's an actual religion like Christianity or Common Sense. The two are separate but equal. In socialism; the socialism is the politics and the religion wrapped all into one so no separate religion is needed--and for that matter nor is any common sense.
